Characteristics of the Clumber Spaniel
The largest of the spaniel breeds
Known for its distinctive appearance, gentle nature and enduring working ability.
Although substantial in build, the Clumber is an active and versatile gundog that enjoys being involved in family life and having a job to do.

A distinctive appearance
Powerful, substantial and unmistakable
Clumbers are powerful, substantial dogs with a long, low-set body and a beautiful, predominantly white coat marked with lemon or orange.
The breed is particularly recognisable for its square head, thoughtful expression and deep-set eyes. Their long, low build, heavy bone and abundant feathering give the Clumber a very distinctive presence.
Coat
White with lemon or orange
Markings are usually concentrated around the head and ears, although some ticking or flecking may be present on the body and legs.
Head
Square head, thoughtful expression
Deep-set eyes and a square head give the Clumber its famously thoughtful look.
Build
Long, low and heavy-boned
A long, low-set body, heavy bone and abundant feathering create a very distinctive presence.
Despite their size, Clumbers should be fit, active and capable of carrying out the work for which they were originally bred. Maintaining a healthy body weight is particularly important in such a substantial breed.
Living with a Clumber
Not simply a large dog that enjoys lying around
Beneath that dignified appearance is an active, intelligent and inquisitive spaniel.
What a Clumber needs
An active mind and a busy nose
Things to consider
Is your home right for a Clumber?
Grooming & everyday care
That beautiful white coat
…does require regular attention, and it sheds throughout the year.
Regular brushing helps collect loose hair before it hits your floor, where it quickly turns into ‘Clumberweed’ and gets blown around by any draughts, so a good vacuum cleaner is highly recommended.

Coat
Frequent brushing
Keeps the coat, feathering and furnishings free from tangles and mats.
Feathering
Legs, chest & underside
Pay particular attention here, as well as to the hair between the toes.
Feet
Neatly trimmed
Helps prevent knots and the build-up of mud and debris.
Eyes & ears
Checked regularly
Eyes and ears should be checked regularly and kept clean.

A Clumber’s coat can be wonderfully impressive, but be prepared for shedding, muddy feathers, more shedding and the occasional wet-dog moment!
