Rescue & Rehome

For every Clumber in need

Our volunteer-run rescue scheme has been finding safe, loving homes for Clumber Spaniels for decades — with no cost to acquire a dog, and the welfare of every Clumber as its only aim.

Our Purpose

What is Clumber Spaniel Rescue?

Clumber Spaniel Rescue is a non-profit scheme created to rescue, care for and re-home Clumber Spaniels who find themselves in distress through unforeseen circumstances — death, old age, ill health, family changes, emigration and more. It does not buy or sell Clumbers, has no paid employees, and no payment is ever made to acquire a dog. The welfare of the dog is its only aim.

Volunteers run the scheme alongside a Rescue & Rehome Co-ordinator, appointed by Club members, who receives a small honorarium from the Clumber Spaniel Club. Every volunteer gives their time, effort and often their own money, simply out of love for the breed.

How It Works

From first phone call to a new home

Clumber Spaniels may come into Rescue for many reasons, including bereavement, old age, ill health, changes in family circumstances, emigration or other unforeseen situations.

How dogs come into rescue

The process begins with a call to the Rescue Co-ordinator, either from the owner or someone acting on their behalf. Once the owner has agreed to the dog entering Rescue, a volunteer will usually arrange to collect the dog.

The volunteer will complete a short questionnaire with the owner and ask them to complete a Clumber Spaniel Club Transfer of Ownership form. This helps us understand the dog's medical, behavioural and other needs so that appropriate care and a suitable new home can be arranged.

No payment is made to acquire a dog.

Owners are encouraged to contact the dog's breeder, although this is entirely their choice. Any available registration documents are welcomed but are not required for the dog to enter the Rescue scheme.

Once accepted into Rescue, the dog is transported by one or more volunteers to a safe and suitable environment where its immediate needs can be assessed and addressed.

What Happens Next?

Every dog is assessed by an experienced handler to understand its temperament and identify any immediate health needs. Veterinary care is arranged where necessary, and the dog is cared for until a suitable home is found.

Potential new owners are carefully considered and advised about the breed, including any challenges they may need to be prepared for. A volunteer will normally carry out a home visit, preferably accompanied by an adult Clumber Spaniel.

Where a suitable match is found, the dog will spend a probationary period with its prospective new owners. If this is successful, the new owners will complete a transfer of ownership and agree to contact Clumber Spaniel Rescue if any concerns arise.

We welcome donations to support the Rescue scheme, although no specific amount is requested.

A follow-up visit may also be arranged to ensure the dog and its new owners are settling in well and to offer any further support needed.

Registration papers are not normally transferred to new owners, helping to prevent breeding from rescued dogs.
Any exception to this policy must be approved by the Clumber Spaniel Club Committee and would only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Every CLumber Matters

Every rescued Clumber Spaniel is important.

How we care for these dogs and support them into their new homes reflects the values and commitment of the Clumber Spaniel Club and all its members. The gallery below shows a selection of the rescue Clumber Spaniels enjoying their new lives.
